CommentDeletion of cdhC or transposon insertion into the coding sequence results in a strain unable to grow using L-carnitine as a sole carbon source. The specific function of CdhC in carnitine catabolism is not known but bioinformatic analysis supports the strong conservation of the cdhCAB genes in all species known to aerobically catabolize L-carnitine.
